You may have heard the term "going green." What exactly does that mean? In its simplest terms, green means environmentally friendly. A good question to ask is, "what makes a house environmentally friendly?" There are many answers to that question. Think about the components of a house and how they are put together to make a final product. You have your design, materials, mechanical components, appliances, landscape, and also don't forget the skilled professionals that are required to assemble all of these components into the final product, your house. A house can be turned green in any component of building.
A green design can keep the sun out of your house on hot summer days and let it into your house during those cold winter months. New and innovative green building products are being made every day. An on demand water heater and high efficiency furnace will reduce your energy consumption and save on utility bills. Depending on your climate, you may want to choose vegetation that saves on water. I'm not talking about saying goodbye to your lawn, there are plenty of alternatives to your thirsty bluegrass. A house can also be built green simply by technique. If your contractors can achieve the same result with less material, then you have successfully been a friend to the environment. And that's what building green is all about. |
